Zermatt is a popular holiday resort that has excellent skiing, shopping, restaurants and most of all, the Matterhorn. Accessible from Zurich on the fast train, you can get to Zermatt in 3 1/2 hours.
The Matterhorn is 4,478 meters high and derives its name from the German words Matte, meaning “meadow”, and Horn, which means “peak.” The trek to the top of the Matterhorn is only attempted in the summer and is difficult even then. But there are plenty of views of the beautiful mountain and it’s 37 sisters that surround it. You can’t ski down the Matterhorn without a helicopter dropping you off, but there are many great ski areas easily reached from Zermatt. One man named Ulrich Inderbinen climbed the mountain 370 times during his lifetime, climbing it for his final time at 90 years old.
Sustainability is big in Switzerland, especially in Zermatt! Don’t think of driving there, your best option is to take a train. Then, once you arrive you have two options, a horse carriage or an electric car. The village can easily be walked by foot, so relax, don’t worry about traffic and save some trees on your vacation.
